A key limitation is usually price. These terminals can range in price from $800 to over $3000, excluding the radio. However if one owns or has access to a duplex frequency pair and radio base station the total cost of ownership over the long haul can be less, as there is no monthly charge for the wireless transmission of data. On the flip side, if one does not own a radio channel there are very few dedicated mobile data terminals that operate on public networks. This is particularly troublesome when ones service area covers a large geographic area, as it is very difficult and expensive to set up a private radio system to cover the required geography.

There are significant numbers of peripherals available however operation compatibility can be an issue. Usually the manufacture of the data terminal produces a list of compatible peripheral devices for use with the terminal. This list often includes a printer, credit card reader, emergency foot switch etc.

Mobile data terminals are typically mounted permanently in a vehicle. Traditional mobile data users, such as the Taxi industry often prefer this approach, as it tends to keep their driver in the vehicle. In addition, bolting the equipment to the vehicle makes it difficult for the driver to accidentally take the device home in his pocket or drop it and damage it. Other industries, such as courier and field service, prefer their workers to carry the wireless device with them to the job site.
