Car 54 Where Are You?
Back in the good old days, there was no way for central dispatch to determine the location of their organization's vehicles. The 60’s TV show Car 54 even poked fun at how a police car and its officers could get lost. Fast forward to the 21st century and thanks to the US governments GPS (Global Positioning System) satellites and an investment of over $12 billion dollars, it is now possible to very accurately determine your location within a few yards. Of course, you already knew that...
There are 24 satellites in orbit above the earth that transmit a signal that can be received by a GPS receiver. If a GPS receiver simultaneously receives signals from a minimum of 3 satellites, it can determine your location through a process of triangulation.
