iTRAK® GPS Tracking for Phones
Government mandates that cellular carriers must be able to pinpoint caller location on emergency 911 calls (E911) originating from cellular phones, coupled with recent advances in micro-circuit technology have spurred the development of GPS -capable cellular phones. Since their introduction into the North American market approximately 3 years ago, sales of GPS capable phones have grown exponentially, as fleet operators have been quick to reap the benefits of low cost fleet tracking. Cellular carriers using Motorola's iDEN technology, such as Telus, Sprint/Nextel and Southern Linc now offer state-of-the-art GPS-enabled phones from Motorola and GPS capable Blackberry devices from Research In Motion.
By itself, the built-in GPS receiver does nothing for the end user, other than provide phone location in the event of a 911 emergency call. However, iTRAKjava brings full featured GPS tracking into the mainstream, allowing businesses to track the location, speed, heading, stops and starts of their employees on a real-time basis from any internet connected PC. Activating GPS tracking on these phones requires a monthly subscription to the iTRAK Fleet Manager tracking service and packet data service from the wireless carrier.
The GPS performance of these phones is surprisingly good, thanks to technology from Sirf Technology, Inc., creators of its GPS chipset, which uses information from the cellular network tower sites (Assisted GPS) to increase location accuracy. iTRAKjava can be programmed to start automatically when the phone is powered on and then run in the background, allowing phone calls and Direct Connect calls to take place as usual. Anytime iTRAKjava is started or stopped on the handset, this information is reported to the iTRAK Fleet Manager, allowing reports to be generated showing when a worker turned on or off the java application.
Together, these GPS capable phones and iTRAKjava are a blessing for those business users who recognize the benefits of AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) but could not previously make the ROI (Return on Investment) numbers work to justify an investment in the technology. For those thousands of commercial business owners who already use Direct Connect® on Sprint/Nextel, Telus or Southern Linc's iDEN™ networks for fleet communications, GPS tracking is now well within reach. In fact, in the words of many iTRAKjava users, its pretty much a "no-brainer".
